U.S. chipmaker Intel Corp. has posted its worst-ever quarterly loss for the first quarter of this year, reaching nearly $4 trillion. In its first-quarter earnings release, Intel said revenue plunged 36% to $11.7 billion ($24.65 trillion) from the year-ago quarter ($18.4 billion). This is the fifth consecutive quarterly decline in revenue since the first quarter of last year.

Intel struggling with a rapid drop in revenue and earnings, is cutting management pay across the company to cope with a shaky economy and preserve cash for an ambitious turnaround plan. Chief Executive Officer Pat Gelsinger is taking a 25% cut to his base salary, the chipmaker said Tuesday. His executive leadership team will see their pay packets decreased by 15%. Senior managers will take a 10% reduction, and the compensation for mid-level managers will be cut by 5%.

최근 수년간 전문 반도체 업체를 놔두고도 인공지능(AI)반도체에 대한 개발에 힘을 쏟는 기업들이 잇따르고 있다. 이런 가운데 여전히 많은 사람들은 AI 반도체라는 특화된 반도체가 필요한 이유에 대해 궁금해 한다. 또한 GPU(그래픽 처리 장치)업체 엔비디아와 AMD가 기존 컴퓨팅용 CPU(중앙 처리 장치) 강자인 인텔을 제치고 자율주행차용 AI칩 및 AI 훈련용 고성능 컴퓨터(슈퍼컴) 분야에서 강세를 보이는 이유에 대해서도 마찬가지일 것이다.

Italy's Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni said on Thursday she would request a meeting with representatives of Intel to discuss a possible multibillion-euro investment by the U.S. chipmaker in Italy. Intel earlier this year announced it aimed to build a chip factory in the country as part of a wider plan to invest as much as 80 billion euros ($85.15 billion) over the next decade in building capacity across Europe. The deal, which is expected to involve state subsidies, has not yen been finalised.
