Microsoft will officially end support for Windows 10 on October 14. As a result, security updates will stop, but users can receive up to one additional year of support for free through the Extended Security Updates (ESU) program. Windows 10 will continue to function after support ends, but the lack of regular security patches will increase the risk of malware. Microsoft has presented users with three options: upgrade to Windows 11 for free if the PC is compatible, purchase a new PC with Windows 11 pre-installed, or enroll in ESU to extend security updates for another year. While a paid extension option of $30 was once mentioned, a free path is now available for users in the United States. However, it comes with certain conditions, such as linking your account to Microsoft’s cloud services and a 5GB limit on free backup storage. To register for ESU, go to “Settings > Update & Security,” install the latest Windows 10 updates, and click “Enroll Now.” Once the “Add this device to receive Extended Security Updates” step is completed, the process is finished.
