Microsoft is replacing the iconic “Blue Screen of Death (BSOD)” error screen in Windows with the “Black Screen of Death” after 40 years. The new design removes the traditional blue background, frowning face, and QR code, switching to a simplified black screen that only displays the stop code and the faulty system driver. This change aims to provide clearer information so IT administrators can easily identify the cause of problems without analyzing crash dumps. Microsoft plans to introduce the new BSOD and the “Quick Machine Recovery” feature—which quickly restores unbootable devices—through a Windows 11 update later this summer. The update is part of Microsoft’s broader effort to strengthen Windows resiliency, following last year’s CrowdStrike incident that left millions of PCs stuck on the BSOD.
