Google has announced that it will retire the default HTML view of Gmail starting in January 2024. Gmail will automatically switch to the standard view, according to Google's support page. Some users told Hacker News that they received an email from Google announcing the feature's end. "Starting in early January 2024, Gmail's default HTML view for desktop web and mobile web will be retired. The Gmail native HTML view is an older version of Gmail that was replaced by its modern successor more than a decade ago and does not include all Gmail features." If you still try to access the HTML version today, Google will tell you that it's "intended for slow connections and older browsers" and ask you to confirm that you want to use the standard version. "Why not use the standard version? So, Google isn't shutting down Gmail itself, just the default HTML view. "The vast majority of users will not be affected, and we encourage them to use the standard view," Google said.
