A British consortium, with funding from the UK government, has successfully tested what it calls "un-jammable" quantum navigation technology in flight. GPS jamming has been introduced as a means of disrupting enemy communication and navigation, which can cause disturbances for both military and civilian transportation and location services. The quantum-based navigation system, called PNT (Positioning, Navigation, and Timing), consists of an optical atomic clock and an ultra-cold-atom-based quantum system. Optical atomic clocks measure time with incredible precision using the frequency of light emitted or absorbed by atoms as they change energy levels, while ultra-cold quantum systems can calculate position based on measurements of inertial forces acting on atoms held in quantum superposition states. These technologies can form part of a Quantum Inertial Navigation System (Q-INS), which can offer an alternative to GPS and is naturally resistant to jamming and electronic interference. This not only provides military advantages but could also play a significant role in the development of next-generation combat air systems.
