Coinbase has officially confirmed that overseas customer support staff were bribed by criminals to hand over personal data of approximately 70,000 customers. The data breach occurred on December 26, 2024, but was not discovered until May 11. The leaked information includes names, addresses, phone numbers, email addresses, partial Social Security numbers, partial bank account details, images of identification documents such as passports, and account balances and transaction histories. However, passwords, private keys, or any information that would allow direct access to accounts were not included. All involved support staff have been terminated, and Coinbase estimates that the remediation costs related to this incident will range between $180 million and $400 million. CEO Brian Armstrong apologized to customers, announced a $20 million bounty for information leading to the arrest of those responsible, and advised customers to strengthen their account security. Affected customers are being offered one year of identity protection and credit monitoring services.
