Anthropic has released a new web search API that allows its Claude AI models to search the internet in real time. This tool enables developers to build applications that augment Claude’s built-in knowledge with up-to-date information, without needing to manage a search infrastructure. When enabled, Claude uses reasoning to decide if a query needs current data, then generates and executes web searches. It can refine queries, perform multi-step searches, and cite its sources. Developers can control search domains and restrict web search use at the organization level. The feature works with Claude 3.7 Sonnet, 3.5 Sonnet, and 3.5 Haiku models. Pricing starts at $10 per 1,000 searches. The tool is also being added to Claude Code, allowing developers to retrieve live technical documentation during coding tasks.
