오픈AI는 GPT-4.1과 GPT-4.1 미니 모델을 챗GPT에 출시했다고 15일 공식 발표했다.
GPT-4.1은 코드 작성과 지시 사항 이행에서 뛰어난 성능을 보이며, 기존 GPT-4o보다 빠른 속도를 자랑한다. 이 모델은 챗GPT 플러스, 프로, 팀 요금제 구독자에게 제공되며, GPT-4.1 미니는 무료 및 유료 사용자 모두 사용할 수 있다. 이에 따라 GPT-4.0 미니는 모든 사용자에게서 제거되었다. GPT-4.1은 새로운 인터페이스나 초지능 기능은 없으며, '프론티어 모델'이 아니기 때문에 별도의 안전보고서 없이 출시되었다는 점에서 논란이 있었다. 오픈AI는 이에 대응해 안전성 평가 결과를 공개하는 ‘Safety Evaluations Hub’를 개설하고, 투명성을 강화하겠다고 밝혔다.
GPT-4.1 출시 시점은 AI 코딩 도구 시장 경쟁이 격화되는 가운데 이루어졌으며, 오픈AI는 인기 AI 코딩 툴 '윈드서프(Windsurf)' 인수를 추진 중이다. 같은 날 구글도 제미니(Gemini) 챗봇을 업데이트해 깃허브(GitHub) 연동 기능을 강화하며 대응에 나섰다.

GPT-4.1 is now available for ChatGPT Plus, Pro, and Team subscribers, while GPT-4.1 mini is open to all free and paying users. This update removes GPT-4.0 mini for all users. The initial release of GPT-4.1 without a safety report drew criticism, but OpenAI clarified that the model is not considered a frontier system. To increase transparency, OpenAI has launched a new “Safety Evaluations Hub” and committed to publishing regular safety evaluations. The launch comes amid heightened competition in AI coding tools, with OpenAI reportedly close to acquiring Windsurf for $3 billion. In parallel, Google upgraded its Gemini chatbot to better integrate with GitHub repositories.
