OpenAI decided to bring back GPT-4o just one day after switching GPT-5 to the default model. CEO Sam Altman announced plans to allow paid subscribers to choose GPT-4o. Previously, users could directly select GPT-4o for complex tasks and other models for simpler tasks, but after GPT-5 was introduced, the model selection menu was removed, leading to criticism over the reduced user control.
