Google will block the sideloading of Android apps from developers who have not verified their identity starting in 2026. Developers will need to complete verification before users can install their apps from outside official app stores. The company announced the policy after a recent analysis revealed that malware was found over 50 times more frequently in internet-sideloaded apps than in those available on Google Play. Google stressed that the verification process is not an inspection of app content but simply an identity check for developers. To support developers distributing apps outside the Play Store, the company plans to introduce a dedicated “Android Developer Console” that will enable them to go through the verification process and register their package names. The new requirement will take effect in late 2026 in Brazil, Singapore, Indonesia, and Thailand, before expanding worldwide.
