Tesla’s ongoing sales slump in Europe dragged its stock down more than 4% on Thursday. While demand for electric vehicles remained strong across the region, accounting for 16% of the new car market, Tesla’s EV registrations in August fell 23% year-over-year to 14,831 units. For the first eight months of this year, registrations declined 32.6%. By contrast, total EV registrations in Europe rose 26% during the same period, while petrol and diesel vehicle registrations dropped by more than 20%. Market analysts expect Tesla to deliver 456,000 vehicles in the third quarter, surpassing consensus estimates. In the U.S., EV sales may also rise in the short term as consumers rush to take advantage of the $7,500 federal tax credit before it expires at the end of September. However, Elon Musk’s political activism is seen as tarnishing the Tesla brand. Musk voiced support for Germany’s far-right AfD and recently appeared by video at an anti-immigrant rally in the U.K., fueling further controversy.
