As the U.S. government entered a shutdown forcing hundreds of thousands of federal workers into unpaid furlough, NASA instructed personnel working on the Artemis program with SpaceX and Blue Origin to continue their duties. During the shutdown, their work will go unpaid but hours must be recorded, with wages to be reimbursed once the government reopens. NASA stated that it will maintain uninterrupted support for ISS operations, satellite missions in the operations phase, and the Artemis program. Under this measure, about 15,000 NASA employees will be furloughed, while roughly 3,000 will continue working. Artemis III, scheduled for 2027, will use SpaceX’s Starship to land two astronauts on the lunar south pole, while Blue Origin will continue developing its lunar lander.
미국 정부가 셧다운에 들어가며 수십만 명의 연방 공무원이 무급휴직에 돌입했지만, 나사(NASA)는 스페이스X와 블루오리진이 참여하는 아르테미스 프로젝트 인력에게 근무를 이어가도록 지시했다. 셧다운 기간 중 이들의 업무는 무급으로 진행되지만 근무 시간은 기록해야 하며, 정부 재개 이후 급여가 소급 지급될 예정이다. 나사는 ISS 운영, 운용 단계 위성 임무, 아르테미스 프로젝트 등을 중단 없이 지원한다고 밝혔다. 이번 조치로 나사 직원 약 1만5천 명은 무급휴직에 들어가고, 3천 명가량이 근무를 유지한다. 아르테미스 III는 2027년 스페이스X의 스타십을 활용해 두 명의 우주인을 달 남극에 착륙시키는 임무로 진행될 예정이며, 블루오리진 역시 달 착륙선 개발을 이어간다.
