NASA announced on its YouTube channel at 11 a.m. local time today that it is ready to share with the public its findings on samples taken from the 4.5 billion-year-old asteroid Bennu. The release comes less than three weeks after the Osiris-Rex spacecraft parachuted a capsule of Bennu's debris onto a Department of Defense training range in Utah. NASA then moved the sample to the Johnson Space Center in Houston for a full analysis. Launched in September 2016 at a cost of $1.2 billion, Osiris-Rex reached the 1,650-foot-wide asteroid two years later. In 2020, it dug much deeper into Bennu than expected, collecting the largest asteroid surface sample to date. The goal was to bring back at least 2.1 ounces, and early estimates suggest that about 8.8 ounces were collected. NASA will be releasing the exact specifications and quality of the material, as well as other interesting information about the findings, via a livestream.
