OpenAI has announced the release of a macOS ChatGPT desktop app, now available to all users at no cost. This move aims to significantly enhance accessibility, granting Apple Silicon Mac users running macOS Sonoma or later access to robust AI assistants. Initially, the app was rolled out gradually to Plus subscribers last month. Now, anyone with a compatible Apple Silicon Mac can directly download and install the ChatGPT app from OpenAI. Notably, the macOS version of ChatGPT was prioritized ahead of its Windows counterpart, which has yet to see an official release. This decision underscores the strategic partnership between OpenAI and Microsoft, particularly with the integration of Microsoft CoPilot into Windows 11. The macOS ChatGPT app offers familiar features available on the ChatGPT website, including interaction with custom GPTs and the ability to upload files, photos, and screenshots. A standout feature of the macOS app is its customizable keyboard shortcuts (defaulting to Option-Space), enabling users to easily initiate chatbot queries from any macOS application. Meanwhile, OpenAI and Apple are continuing their collaboration on future innovations, such as Apple Intelligence, expected to debut later this year.
