Meta Platforms has announced that it will not immediately join the European Union's (EU) AI Pact. This pact is a temporary measure before the full implementation of the EU's AI Act, which is related to the first rules for the development and deployment of artificial intelligence agreed upon by EU lawmakers in May. The AI Act includes provisions requiring companies to provide detailed summaries of the data used to train their artificial intelligence models. The European Commission has announced that most of the rules in this act will come into effect on August 2, 2026. Until the law is implemented, companies are encouraged to sign a voluntary AI agreement to fulfill key obligations. Meta is currently focusing on compliance work under the AI Act and has left open the possibility of joining the AI Pact at a later date. The AI Act is the fifth pillar of EU legislation and is set to work in conjunction with the Digital Markets Act, Digital Services Act, Data Governance Act, and Data Act.
