NASA has once again postponed its first crewed moon landing mission in 50 years. On December 7, the agency announced that the lunar landing mission, originally scheduled for 2026, has been pushed back to no earlier than mid-2027. Additionally, a planned mission to fly astronauts around the moon in September 2025 has also been delayed to no earlier than April 2026. The primary reason for these delays is an issue with the heat shield of the Orion capsule, which will carry astronauts during both missions. During an uncrewed test flight in 2022, the heat shield suffered unexpected damage. NASA has conducted additional tests to ensure astronaut safety and has identified the root cause of the problem. To address this issue, NASA plans to implement a modified flight trajectory for the next mission. As a result of these delays, the overall schedule for NASA's Artemis program has been significantly pushed back.
