OpenAI, SoftBank, and Oracle are joining forces to launch The Stargate Project, beginning with a massive data center in Texas and expanding across the United States. The venture will initially invest $100 billion and plans to increase investments to $500 billion over the next four years. Major tech companies including Microsoft, Nvidia, and ARM are participating as technology partners, with Middle East AI fund MGX also joining as an investor. Masayoshi Son will serve as chairman, with OpenAI handling operations and SoftBank managing finances. The first data center in Abilene, Texas, is expected to consume one gigawatt of power by mid-2026, enough to supply electricity to approximately 750,000 homes. Goldman Sachs projects that AI will account for 19% of data center power demand by 2028. Environmental groups have expressed concerns about the high power consumption and water usage of data centers.
