Alphabet, Google's parent company, has withdrawn its previous commitment not to use artificial intelligence (AI) in weapons systems or surveillance tools. In its recently updated AI principles, Alphabet removed the content prohibiting AI weapons development that was announced in 2018. Instead, it introduced new principles emphasizing "AI use for innovation" and "support for national security". Demis Hassabis, CEO of Google DeepMind, explained the reason for the change in principles, stating, "AI technology has rapidly evolved, and global AI leadership competition is taking place in an increasingly complex geopolitical environment". In response, Human Rights Watch (HRW) criticized that "Google's relaxation of AI principles has created loopholes for military applications and AI use for surveillance purposes". Meanwhile, Google reportedly provided AI technology to the Israel Defense Forces after Hamas' attack on Israel in October 2023. The United States, United Kingdom, and Israel oppose restrictions on AI weapons systems, and other major AI companies are also expanding cooperation with US defense and intelligence agencies.
