Amazon has announced that it will discontinue its app store service for Android devices on August 20th. The company stated that this decision was made "to focus on the app store experience on our own devices." They also cited the low number of customers using the app store outside of Amazon devices as a reason. Along with the app store, the digital currency service 'Amazon Coins' will also be terminated on the same day. The company plans to refund users for any coins they still hold. However, the app store will continue to operate on Amazon's own devices such as Fire TV and Fire Tablet. Amazon has been trying to build its own independent app store ecosystem to compete with the Google Play Store since 2011, but with this decision, it is effectively withdrawing from the Android market.
아마존이 오는 8월 20일부로 안드로이드용 앱스토어 서비스를 중단한다고 발표했다. 회사 측은 "자사 기기의 앱스토어 경험에 집중하기 위해" 이같은 결정을 내렸다고 밝혔다. 아마존 기기 외에서 앱스토어를 사용하는 고객 수가 적다는 점도 이유로 들었다. 앱스토어와 함께 디지털 화폐인 '아마존 코인' 서비스도 같은 날 종료된다. 회사는 사용자가 보유한 코인에 대해 환불을 진행할 예정이다. 다만 Fire TV와 Fire Tablet 등 아마존 자체 기기에서는 앱스토어가 계속 운영된다. 아마존은 2011년부터 구글 플레이스토어에 대항해 독자적인 앱스토어 생태계를 구축하려 했으나, 이번 결정으로 사실상 안드로이드 시장에서 철수하게 됐다.
