ASML, a Dutch chip-making equipment manufacturer, has agreed to jointly invest about $760 million with South Korean chipmaker Samsung Electronics to build a plant in South Korea that will develop cutting-edge semiconductor processing technology. The announcement came as South Korean President Yoon Suk-yeol was in the Netherlands for a four-day visit, part of his efforts to forge a “semiconductor alliance” between the two countries. ASML is the world’s only maker of extreme ultraviolet (EUV) lithography machines, which are essential for manufacturing the most advanced chips, such as those used in the latest Apple iPhones. “The technological innovation led by ASML is becoming a powerful driving force of the Fourth Industrial Revolution around the world, and Dutch semiconductor companies such as ASML and ASM are building new facilities for production, R&D, and talent training in Korea,” the South Korean presidential office said Tuesday.

네덜란드 칩 제조 장비 제조업체 ASML은 한국의 칩 메이커인 삼성전자와 공동으로 약 7억 6천만 달러를 투자하여 최첨단 반도체 공정 기술을 개발하는 공장을 한국에 건설하기로 합의했다. 이 발표는 윤석열 대통령이 네덜란드를 4일간 방문하여 양국 간 "반도체 동맹"을 구축하기 위한 노력의 일환으로 이루어졌다. ASML은 최신 애플 아이폰과 같이 가장 발전된 칩을 제조하는 데 필요한 극단 자외선 (EUV) 리소그래피 툴을 제조하는 세계 유일의 회사다. 윤 대통령실은 "ASML이 주도하는 기술 혁신은 전 세계 4차 산업혁명의 강력한 추진력이 되고 있으며, ASML, ASM과 같은 네덜란드 반도체 기업들은 한국에 제조, 연구개발, 인재 육성을 위한 새로운 시설을 건설하고 있다"라고 밝혔다.
