The price cuts in the electric car market, initiated by Tesla, are affecting the sales and profits of not only Tesla, but many other electric car producers. Excluding special items, Tesla has cut prices four times this quarter and twice so far this month, generating $2.9 billion in revenue, a 22% drop from a year ago, and a further drop in profit from the third and fourth quarters of last year. "It's important to note that even though we cut prices significantly at the beginning of the quarter, our operating margins are still among the best in the industry," Musk said.

Tesla delivered a record number of vehicles in the first quarter, beating estimates after a series of price cuts stoked demand. Elon Musk’s electric car automaker on Sunday said it produced 440,808 vehicles and delivered 422,875. Sales were up 4% from the previous quarter. Tesla expects to produce roughly 1.8 million cars by the end of the year, although CEO Musk in January said the company has the potential to hit 2 million.
