CIA Director William Burns and Russian counterpart Sergei Naryshkin met in Ankara. It is the highest-level public meeting since Russia's invasion of Ukraine in February. The White House said Mr Burns was not negotiating the end of the war. He was speaking about the risk of nuclear weapons use by Russia and the risk to stability. The US also discussed the issue of American prisoners held "unjustly" in Russia.

Omri Goren, 38, was sentenced to three years in prison under a plea deal. Prosecutors dropped espionage charges against him in exchange for his plea. He had previously been sentenced to prison on four occasions, including for armed robbery. Goren's lawyers say he is not a spy and that he was caught up in a debt crisis.
