美 IT기업 정리해고 칼바람 12월까지도···왜?

올해 초 세계 경제의 역풍이 불기 시작했을 때, 많은 IT기업들이 다가오는 경기 침체에 대한 두려움에 고용에 제동을 걸었다. 하지만 더 나쁜 소식이 전해졌다. 기업들이 금리 상승, 우크라이나 전쟁(2021.3~), 높은 연료비, 공급망 문제, 개인용 PC 판매 감소 등의 상황 속에서 운영비 절감 방법을 모색하기 시작했다. 그 결과로 나타난 것이 이후 인력 감축으로 여겨진다.

Salesforce confirmed Tuesday that it cut some employees this week. The enterprise software maker saw demand lighten in some countries and industries. Salesforce said in a filing that headcount rose 36% in the past year ‘to meet the higher demand for services from our customers’

SoftBank is planning to cut at least 30% of staff at its ambitious investment arm, the Vision Fund, a source confirmed to CNBC’s Deirdre Bosa. At least 150 out of 500 Vision Fund workers will be impacted by the cuts, according to Bloomberg, which first reported the news on Thursday. SoftBank Founder Masayoshi Son had foreshadowed cost cutting this summer after the company posted a $21.6 billion quarterly loss for the Vision Fund.

Streaming company SoundCloud is cutting about 20 percent of its global workforce. CEO Michael Weissman told staff in a memo that the change is mostly due to the current economic climate. Employees affected would be notified over the next several days. In 2017, SoundCloud fired about 40 per cent of its workforce.

Nonfungible token (NFT) marketplace OpenSea announced mass layoffs on Thursday, Co-founder and CEO Devin Finzer took to Twitter Thursday afternoon to disclose that his company was laying off up to 20% of its staff. In a long message conveyed to employees, Finzer blamed “an unprecedented combination of crypto winter and broad macroeconomic instability” for the layoffs.

Netflix is laying off around 300 employees across the company, CNBC confirmed Thursday. The cuts come about a month after the streaming company eliminated about 150 positions in the wake of its first subscriber loss in a decade. Netflix had warned investors in April that it would be pulling back on some of its spending growth over the next two years.

Four days ago, Armstrong responded on Twitter to an employee petition calling for the removal of Coinbase execs, calling it “really dumb on multiple levels” and encouraging employees unhappy with the situation or proposed solutions to quit.

Microsoft is laying off 400 employees in Russia. The company suspended new sales of products and services in Russia in March. Microsoft says it's working with impacted employees. Russia accounts for less than one percent of Microsoft’s revenue. The move comes more than three months after Russia invaded Ukraine.
