Nikon is halting development of new SLR cameras, marking the end of a 63-year run. From now on, it will focus exclusively on mirrorless Z mount models. Canon already confirmed that the EOS-1DX Mark III will be its final flagship DSLR. Sony moved to selling only mirrorless cameras last year.

Optics and imaging giant Nikon will stop making new single lens reflex cameras — once the technological mainstay of professional photography. Nikon will continue to produce and distribute its existing SLR models, but will focus development of new models entirely on mirrorless. Nikkei notes that Nikon’s SLR cameras were “widely used by professional cameramen for more than 60 years and have come to be seen as synonymous with the Japanese company.”

Nikon has unveiled the 20.9-megapixel APS-C Z30, its smallest and lightest Z-series camera yet. Designed for vloggers and creators, it offers a flip-out display, 4K 30p video and a long 125-minute video record time when plugged in. The Z30 competes with Sony's ZV-E10 vlogging camera and has one advantage over its rival: It can shoot 4K at up to 30fps using the full width of the sensor.
