Virginia-based Mandiant is an American cybersecurity firm acquired by Google. While the use of artificial intelligence (AI) to conduct manipulative information campaigns online has increased in recent years, the use of the technology for other digital intrusions has so far been limited, according to the Mandiant study. The research was prompted by the discovery of "numerous instances" since 2019 of AI-generated content, such as manipulated profile pictures, being used in politically motivated online influence campaigns.

Mandiant, the cybersecurity company acquired by Google, has released its M-Trends report on emerging cyber threats. According to the report, while concerns about the threat of hackers have never been higher. There have also been some significant recent advances in cyber defense. For example, cybersecurity organizations are becoming more proficient much faster, with attacks being caught in weeks rather than months, as in the case of the 3CX supply chain breach, and the SolarWinds supply chain breach, according to the report.

Google completed its $5.4 billion acquisition of Mandiant on Monday. The Mandiant buy marks the second most expensive acquisition in Google’s history. Google plans to retain the Mandiant brand under Google Cloud. Google in August 2021 pledged to invest $10 billion in cybersecurity over the next five years.
