Meta's Reality Labs division has revealed new prototypes for its virtual reality headsets. The company is working on lightweight, hyper-realistic graphics for its headsets. CEO Mark Zuckerberg says the company plans to ship a high-end headset in 2022. The headsets will be cheap and consumer-focused, with a professional-grade version aimed at the professional market.

Facebook's Meta has developed a new approach to speech-to-speech translation. The social media giant's approach is called Direct S2ST, which eliminates the text-generation step in spoken language conversion. It is being tested using the University of Pennsylvania’s Spanish-English speech translation corpus.

Meta has decided not to sell its first version of standalone augmented reality glasses, codenamed Orion. Instead, the company will distribute them to developers so they can build software experiences for the device and future versions. The company is also shelving plans to release a smartwatch with a detachable display and two cameras in favor of a design better suited to control the glasses.

Facebook is shifting its artificial-intelligence development out of central research labs. The move is aimed at accelerating the technology's adoption as it pushes for faster growth. The social media giant's parent company, Meta Platforms, announced the move last week. It breaks with recent practice, which concentrated AI research efforts in centralized hubs.

Jerome Pesenti, Meta’s VP of AI for the past four years, will leave later this month as the company closer integrates his AI teams across various product groups rather than have AI function as a centralized organization. AI is already used for everything from ordering what you see when you open Facebook and Instagram to the software powering the Oculus VR headset. The change is meant to “leverage the newest AI technology at scale” across the company.

Sheryl Sandberg is stepping down from her role as Chief Operating Officer at Meta, the company formerly known as Facebook. Sandberg joined Facebook in early 2008 as the No. 2 to Facebook CEO and co-founder Mark Zuckerberg. Javier Olivan, the company’s chief growth officer, will take over as COO this fall. Sandberg will continue to serve on Meta’s board of directors.

According to aggregator.fyi, more than 15,000 tech workers have lost their jobs this month, while Meta and Twitter have publicly announced hiring freezes, while Snap confirmed this week that it is slowing hiring as it misses revenue targets. A change in hiring cadence, along with the Great Resignation, could mean that headcount is net decreasing at the aforementioned companies, as people leave and companies are slow to refill empty positions.

Microsoft and Meta extend their AI partnership. Meta will use Microsoft's Azure cloud to accelerate its AI research and development. Microsoft also announced a new Arm-based dev kit running on the Qualcomm Snapdragon platform. Microsoft's OpenAI service is now available in preview for preview.
