Top officials are discussing ways to move away from costly subsidies that have so far borne little fruit and encouraged both graft and American sanctions, people familiar with the matter said. While some continue to push for incentives of as much as 1 trillion yuan ($145 billion), other policymakers have lost their taste for an investment-led approach that’s not yielded the results anticipated, the people said.

Italy's Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni said on Thursday she would request a meeting with representatives of Intel to discuss a possible multibillion-euro investment by the U.S. chipmaker in Italy. Intel earlier this year announced it aimed to build a chip factory in the country as part of a wider plan to invest as much as 80 billion euros ($85.15 billion) over the next decade in building capacity across Europe. The deal, which is expected to involve state subsidies, has not yen been finalised.

A subsidiary of Taiwan’s Hon Hai Precision Industry will dispose of its indirect minority stake in China’s semiconductor giant Tsinghua Unigroup, the latest sign that Beijing’s chip industry is becoming increasingly isolated from the rest of the world. Hon Hai’s China-listed Foxconn Industrial Internet will sell the shares to Yantai Haixiu IC Investment Center for not less than 5.38 billion yuan ($772 million), according to an exchange filing Friday.

미국 정부가 중국의 반도체와 인공지능(AI) 포함한 중국 기업 36개를 수출통제 대상으로 지정했다. 미국 상무부는 현지시각 15일, 수출관리규정(EAR)을 개정해 36개 중국 기업을 오는 16일부로 '수출통제 명단'에 추가한다고 밝혔다. 이는 중국의 반도체와 인공지능(AI) 산업 육성을 견제하고 첨단무기 개발을 막기 위한 의도로 풀이된다.
