삼성전자, 애플 등 스마트폰 대기업들이 모바일 기기와 인공위성을 연결하는 위성통신 서비스를 속속 내놓고 있다. 그동안 주류로 사용되지 않았던 위성통신이 반도체 등 기술 발전과 함께 스마트폰 위성연결도 가능한 시대가 됐다.

Smartphones are making the war in Ukraine the most intensively documented in history, changing the shape of the conflict and transforming the world’s understanding of it. Each of the millions of devices in and around Ukraine are sensors that can provide data located to place and time. Their microphones and cameras can record and transmit sounds and images that depict the facts of war or provide tools for propaganda. These records are allowing investigators to build extensive visual archives of the conflict that could eventually provide a reckoning for war crimes.

애플의 모바일 간편결제 서비스 ‘애플페이’가 한반도 상륙 초읽기에 들어갔다. 그동안 갤럭시 이용자들을 묶었던 ‘삼성페이’에 경쟁자가 등장하는 것이어서 삼성전자와 애플의 주도권 다툼이 더욱 치열해질 전망이다. 2014년 출시된 애플페이는 전 세계 74개국 약 5억 명 이상의 사용자를 확보한 모바일 간편결제 서비스다. 다만 한국에서는 아직까지 정식으로 출시되지 않았다. 그 사이 신한카드와 온라인 커머스 중심으로 삼성페이·신한플레이·KB페이·NH페이·오픈페이·네이버페이·카카오페이·페이코·쿠팡페이·스마일페이·배민페이·토스페이·SK페이·쓱페이·엘페이 등 최근 몇 년 간 국내 모바일 간편결제 서비스가 우후죽순 생겨나면서 현재 50개에 가까운 숫자로 늘었다.

Qualcomm forecast second-quarter revenue and profit below Wall Street estimates on Thursday as the chipmaker grapples with the combined toll of weak demand for smartphones and a supply glut, a situation that is expected to persist into the first-half of this year. The stock, which initially rose 2.7% in after-hours trading, fell 3%. "The handset industry continues to experience reduced demand, and we are now expecting elevated channel inventory levels to persist at least through the first half of calendar 2023," Cristiano Amon, Qualcomm CEO told investors.

애플의 지난해 4분기 세계 스마트폰 출하량이 전년 동기에 비해 20% 가까이 급감한 것으로 나타났다. 26일(현지시간) 블룸버그통신에 따르면 시장조사업체 IDC가 집계한 지난해 4분기 세계 스마트폰 출하량은 3억 30만대로 전년 동기보다 18.3% 줄었다.

Global smartphone shipments plunged in the fourth quarter of 2022 — usually a big holiday shopping period — thanks to macroeconomic weakness and soft consumer demand, according to market research firm IDC. Electronics firms shipped 300.3 million smartphones in the October to December quarter, an 18.3% year-over-year fall, IDC said in a report published late Wednesday. The drop marks the largest-ever decline in a single quarter.

Global smartphone shipments dropped 17 per cent year-on-year in Q4 2022 and 11 per cent across the whole year. Full-year shipments were just less than 1.2 billion units. Apple reclaimed the top spot with it’s highest-ever market share of 25 per cent despite manufacturing issues in China. Samsung was second with a 20 per cent market share and Xiaomi remained third.

Xiaomi has begun laying off workers across several of its smartphone and internet services units. The job cuts are reportedly affecting around 15 per cent of the company's workforce. Xiaomi reported a 9.7% fall in third-quarter revenue in November, due to COVID-19 restrictions in China and declining consumer demand. Many affected by the layoffs had only recently joined the company.
