현재 위성 문자 메시지 서비스를 광고하고 있는 링크 글로벌과 같은 지구저궤도(LEO) 위성 네트워크조차도 아직 음성이나 영상 통화에 필요한 대용량 링크를 약속하지는 않고 있다. 찰스 밀러 링크 글로벌 최고경영자(CEO)는 경쟁사들의 야심찬 광고 캠페인에 개의치 않는다. 그는 “이는 사람들이 더 많은 것을 원하게 만들 뿐이다”라고 말했다. 이와 관련, 대다수 사업자들이 초기 서비스 시에는 다수의 사용자들에게 소용량 메시징 서비스부터 시작할 가능성에 대해 무게를 두면서 점차 음성, 영상서비스로 확대해 나가게 될 것으로 보인다.

애플은 지난해 9월 7일 파아웃(Far Out) 행사에서 아이폰14를 발표하면서 휴대폰과 위성을 연결하는 비상 대응 시스템에 관여할 의지를 분명히 밝혔다. 최신 아이폰 모델 2종(아이폰14,아이폰14프로)에 대해 ‘긴급 SOS(emergency SOS)’ 위성 메시징 서비스를 제공할 것이라고 발표한 것이다. 그런데 애플이 아이폰 14와 아이폰14 프로에 단순히 긴급SOS 기능을 도입하는 데 그친 것만이 아니라는 게 이후 더 분명해진다.

Apple is raising the price of replacing the batteries on older iPhones. The company is also raising prices on iPads, MacBooks and some iPads in some international markets. All iPhone 14 models are under warranty, and if something goes wrong the company will fix the phone for free.

시가총액 1위 업체, 빅테크 대장주인 애플마저 시총 2조달러를 반납했다. 미국 증시 새해 첫 거래일에 애플의 주가는 장중 4% 넘게 급락한 끝에 결국 3.7% 급락세로 마감했다. 지난해 중국 정저우 팍스콘 공장 생산차질에 따른 공급 부실과 경기침체 전망에 따른 수요 둔화가 결정적이었다.

평소 쓰던 일반 휴대폰으로 지구 저궤도(LEO) 통신 위성 신호를 받아 메시지 전달같은 간단한 긴급 구조요청 통신부터 시작할 수 있게 될 것으로 전망된다. 물론 이 서비스 사업자가 서비스하기로 맘먹은 지역에 국한된 얘기가 된다. 이미 알려졌다시피 지난해 9월 애플이 최신 아이폰으로 위성통신 서비스를 한다는 소식을 내놓으면서 전세계가 술렁거렸다. 그같은 휴대폰을 사용한 위성통신 상용 서비스 경쟁이 본격적으로 펼쳐지는 게 바로 올해다. 사실 2023년 새해에 이 서비스를 시작할 계획을 진행중인 회사는 애플만이 아니고, 애플이 처음도 아니다.

TSMC is reportedly ready to kick off 3nm chip production at its Fab 18 in Taiwan. Apple is expected to implement its M2 Pro chip based on TSMC's 3nm node in its upcoming MacBook 14 and 16, Mac Studio and Mac mini. The rumor suggests that TSMC will be holding a ceremony in Southern Taiwan Science Park on December 29 to celebrate the start of the 3nm production.
