India has announced plans to build its own space station by 2035 and send a human mission to the moon five years later. India has been ramping up its space program in recent years, and in August it became the first country in the world to land a spacecraft near the south pole of the moon.

Nanoracks performed the first space-based demonstration of cutting metal in orbit. The company used a technique called friction milling to cut a piece of corrosion-resistant metal. The goal of the experiment was to keep the space environment clean and free of debris. The technique could be used to build large-scale space stations.

Russia has shared a model of its future space station, nicknamed ROSS. The orbital facility would launch in two phases, beginning with four modules and expanding to six. The design would accommodate four people in rotating tours and would reportedly provide better surveillance of Earth than Russia is getting from the ISS today. The first phase of the station would start sometime between 2025 and 2030. The second would arrive between 2030 and 2035.

China successfully launched its second module, called Wentian, to the Tiangong space station. Wentian took off aboard a Long March 5B rocket from the Wenchang Space Launch Site in Hainan, China. Mengtian, the station’s third and final lab module, is set to launch in October.
