The U.S., Europol and police in 14 countries seized the infrastructure of a suspected Russian marketplace that claimed access to 80 million stolen banking, social media and email accounts for sale to hackers seeking to break into companies and government offices worldwide, senior Justice Department officials said Wednesday. It also said it had arrested 119 people for distributing ransomware and trading illegal personal information.

Rocketing electricity prices are increasing the cost of driving electric vehicles in Europe, in some cases making them more expensive to run than gas-powered models—a change that could threaten the continent’s electric transition. Electricity prices have soared in the wake of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, in some cases eliminating the cost advantage at the pump that EVs have enjoyed. In some cases, the cost difference between driving both types of cars 100 miles has become negligible. In others, EVs have become more expensive to fuel than equivalent gasoline-powered cars.

The overall European car market is still in the red, and the European passenger plugin vehicle market has also started to get affected. At the same time, BEVs managed to grow last month, by 19%. That’s down on the yearly average growth rate (+30%), but it’s a whole lot better than everything around it. We are seeing two-digit drops across the board. Last month’s plugin vehicle share of the overall European auto market was 19% (11% full electrics/BEVs), keeping the 2022 plugin vehicle (PEV) share at 20% (12% for BEVs alone).

Amazon has increased the price of its Prime subscription in Europe by up to 43%. The price of a monthly Prime membership in the UK will increase from £7.99 to £8.99. The annual Prime membership will go up from £79 to £95, and from £75 to £75. The new prices will come into effect September 15, 2022, and will impact new members and renewals.

OneWeb and Eutelsat plan to merge to create a stronger internet rival to SpaceX's Starlink. The merger is subject to approval from regulators and shareholders and is expected to close by mid-2023. OneWeb currently has 428 satellites in orbit of a planned 648 in its first-generation network.

The Governor of the Bank of France François Villeroy de Galhau said that the world might see a strong central bank digital currency emerge in the next three years. Galhau was asked during a panel at the World Economic Forum in Davos on Monday whether in five years' time there would be "a central bank digital coin" being used on the daily basis (whether wholesale or retail) that would become "a superior system."
