BMW, 중국에 22억달러 규모 전기차 공장 개설

BMW has officially opened its new 15 billion yuan ($2.2 billion) factory in Shenyang, China with a strong focus on electric vehicles. BMW has some catching up to do in China, the world’s largest electric vehicle market, where U.S. rival Tesla and domestic players such as Warren Buffett-backed BYD, dominate sales. BMW is aiming for more than a quarter of its sales in China to be all electric by 2025.

Elon Musk says that Tesla’s factory might not necessarily be in the US as the automaker is also considering options in Canada and Mexico for a new North American plant. Last week, Tesla CEO Elon Musk held a company-wide meeting with employees. Electrek obtained a recording of the meeting, which included a Q&A with workers. During the Q&A, an employee asked Musk where Tesla’s next factory in the US is going to be located. Musk said that Tesla hasn’t decided yet, but he did specify that it might not be in the US:

The manufacturing facility will be able to produce 155,000 vehicles a year, and will initially serve the local market, the luxury car maker said in a press release. Including the 350,000 units a year that can be made in Lucid’s factory in Arizona, the company will be able to produce half a million cars a year by the middle of the decade, earlier than its previous target of 2030, said CEO Peter Rawlinson. Saudi Arabia’s minister of investment, Khalid al-Falih, said he expects more EV manufacturers to set up shop in the kingdom.

Malaysian Prime Minister Ismail Sabri Yaakob wants Tesla to open a plant in Malaysia, inviting several Fortune 500 companies, especially Tesla, to invest in his nation, saying that he has asked the US-ABC to play a larger role in attracting investments to Malaysia.
