The James Webb Space Telescope has detected water vapor around a comet in the asteroid belt. Until now, scientists thought comets could preserve water ice because of their relatively close proximity to the Sun. But this discovery raises a new conundrum. Although carbon dioxide typically makes up 10% of the potentially vaporized material on comets, Webb's instrument did not detect any carbon dioxide in the lead. The team speculates that either the carbon dioxide has dissipated over billions of years, or that Read formed in a relatively temperate part of the solar system where carbon dioxide is absent.
