Ford's electric vehicles will have access to Tesla's fast-charging Superchargers in the U.S. and Canada starting next year, according to CNBC. The announcement of the alliance between the rival automakers is being hailed as unusual by the industry. Under the deal, Ford will have access to Tesla's 17,711 Superchargers.

General Motors is teaming up with Pilot Flying J to build a national fast-charge network for EV drivers. The network will include 2,000 charging stations at 500 Pilot FlyingJ travel centers at 50-mile intervals. Any EV brand can access the network, but GM said its customers will receive benefits such as discounts, exclusive reservations and real-time availability.

U.S. efforts to build a national network of electric vehicle charging stations are moving slowly as states figure out how to fairly dole out public funding to kick-start a new service industry. As the Biden administration prepares to give states $7.5 billion for new charging stations, a similar recent effort suggests a difficult path is ahead. States received $424 million that could be used for charging stations as part of a $2.8 billion settlement by Volkswagen to resolve allegations that it cheated on diesel emissions tests. So far, more than four years later, they have spent about 48% of those charging dollars.
