Ark Invest sold over 1.4 million Coinbase shares – more than 1.1 million from its flagship Ark Innovation ETF and the remainder from its fintech innovation and next generation internet ETFs. The shares were worth almost $75 million, based on the price at close on Tuesday. Wood had been bullish on Coinbase, snapping up almost 4.5 million shares following the exchange's public listing in April 2021.

Goldman Sachs downgraded Coinbase stock from “neutral” to “sell” this morning. The company’s shares have fallen 10% since the markets opened. In a research note to investors, the bank’s analysts led by Will Nance downgraded the shares after several weeks of market volatility and turbulence. The team set a revised price target of $45, down from $70 earlier this year, citing “continued downdraft prices in crypto prices” and the larger drop in activity levels across the industry.

In a post on the company blog, Coinbase CEO Brian Armstrong first blamed changing economic conditions that may lead to a “crypto winter” and waited until his third bullet point to mention that the company has “over-hired,” citing its attempt to take advantage of “new use cases enabled by crypto getting traction practically every week. Four days ago, Armstrong responded on Twitter to an employee petition calling for the removal of Coinbase execs, calling it “really dumb on multiple levels” and encouraging employees unhappy with the situation or proposed solutions to quit.

Two weeks after announcing that it was pausing hiring, Coinbase said it’s extending the freeze for the “foreseeable future.” Coinbase has lost more than 70% of its value this year as turmoil in the economy and a plunge in cryptocurrencies led to a decline in users. “We have decided to pause hiring for as long as this macro environment requires,” the company said.
