This process consumes about 8 billion tons of sand out of the 40-50 billion tons of sand used annually, which has led to a serious shortage of building materials in recent years. "Coffee grounds can be used as a silica substitute in the concrete production process that, when used in the right proportions, creates a much stronger chemical bond than sand alone," said the research team from RMIT University in Australia.
