Google will block website visit tracking (:visited history) starting with Chrome 136. This measure aims to address a web security issue that has persisted for over 20 years, focusing on preventing the misuse of users' browsing history. Web browsers store visit history to display previously visited links in purple. However, under the existing system, websites could invisibly generate multiple links to track a user's browsing history. Malicious sites exploited this vulnerability to determine which pages users had visited in the past and launch attacks based on that information. From Chrome 136 onward, visit history will be partitioned by website. This means a site will only display as visited if the user has clicked the link directly on that specific site. If the same link appears on another website, it will be treated as unvisited. Google stated that Chrome is the first major browser to render this tracking method ineffective and that the update significantly enhances user privacy protection. While the change may cause slight inconvenience, it is considered a crucial improvement in terms of security.
