A French court lowered a record 1.1 billion euro antitrust fine on Apple to 371.6 million euros, roughly a third the value of the original penalty. In 2020, the French competition watchdog fined Apple 1.1 billion euros for allegedly pressuring premium resellers into fixing prices of non-iPhone products. Apple said that while it agreed with the court’s move to reverse part of the French antitrust fine, it believes the decision should be overturned in full and plans to appeal.

The first phase of experiments with a wholesale digital euro has been completed, and Phase 2 experiments will begin this year, Banque de France governor François Villeroy de Galhau said Tuesday. Four or five new experiments are expected to be launched. New experiments will involve testing a prototype digital euro with private actors and other central banks in preparation for the 2023 implementation of the pilot regime. Villeroy de Galhau stressed the importance of interoperability between DLT and the traditional system. DLT will complement rather than replace traditional infrastructure, he said.

The French Parliament recently approved a new law requiring all new commercial buildings to partially have their roofs covered with plants or solar panels. The new requirement will apply to all new buildings in commercial zones. Initially, the proposal posed by French environmental activists was for the roofs to be completely covered by greenery. The new law adds costs for both building owners and developers, so the government decided to ease up a bit on the cost by allowing for the roofs to be partially covered instead of fully covered.
