Apple just made a surprise announcement: a new HomePod smart speaker. While it was thought that a successor to the original HomePod was coming, the timing was unexpected.The first HomePod was Apple’s large smart speaker, released almost five years ago in early 2018. Reviews were mixed about how smart the speaker was, but almost unanimous in one regard: the audio quality was fantastic. Pricing was at the higher end of smart speakers at $349.

According to a report from Mark Gurman, Apple is poised to release a slew of new devices between this fall and the beginning of 2023, including four iPhone 14 devices, a set of new iPads, three Apple Watches, several M2 / M3-upgraded Macs, and a pair of refreshed AirPods Pro buds.
