Huawei, China's leading telecommunications equipment maker, is facing a U.S. cease-and-desist order head-on, but it seems to have gotten over it. The new Mate 60 Pro uses semiconductors developed in-house by Huawei, and has been shown to have speeds comparable to Apple's iPhone. "It appears that Huawei has succeeded in developing a 5G cell phone and, in particular, has developed the semiconductors needed to enable 5G phones," Bloomberg reported.

Portugal may ban Huawei and other Chinese companies from participating in its 5G deployment, according to reports. According to Bloomberg, the Portuguese government recommended this week that local telcos be banned from procuring 5G equipment from vendors outside the European Union or from countries that are not part of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) or the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OCED). In a statement released on Thursday by Portugal's High Council for Cybersecurity, the Portuguese government said companies outside these jurisdictions pose a "high risk" to the security of Portugal's wireless networks. The document does not specifically mention Huawei, but since China is not a member of North Atlantic Treaty Organization, Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe, or the European Union, if Portugal's cabinet approves the security council's recommendation, the country could ban the company. Huawei, along with other Chinese vendors such as ZTE, could be effectively excluded from participating in Portugal's 5G network.

Huawei reportedly said it has developed its own chip design tools, a move aimed at side-stepping U.S. sanctions and making the Chinese technology giant more self-sufficient in the semiconductor space. Eric Xu, rotating chairman at Huawei, said the company along with other domestic firms, jointly created electronic chip design tools required to make semiconductors at 14 nanometers and above, according to a speech obtained by Chinese financial and business publication Yicai.

The Biden administration is considering cutting off Huawei Technologies Co. from all of its American suppliers, including Intel Corp. and Qualcomm Inc., as the US government intensifies a crackdown on the Chinese technology sector. Sales from US firms to Huawei have been limited for four years, since former President Donald Trump added the Shenzhen, China-based company to the so-called US “entity list” out of national security concerns. US suppliers have since required government approval to sell to the telecom equipment giant.
