A leading trade association for US banks has pushed back on the idea of a Fed-issued CBDC. The American Bankers Association, as well as a number of crypto policy organizations, recently wrote to the Commerce Department regarding the outlook for US competitiveness in digital assets.

Bank of International Settlements says 90% of central banks are investigating feasibility of adopting central bank digital currencies. BIS report highlighted ability of current sovereign fiat money to provide price stability and public oversight. Report did highlight crypto's programmable nature and borderless elements of decentralized finance as potential benefits.

The Governor of the Bank of France François Villeroy de Galhau said that the world might see a strong central bank digital currency emerge in the next three years. Galhau was asked during a panel at the World Economic Forum in Davos on Monday whether in five years' time there would be "a central bank digital coin" being used on the daily basis (whether wholesale or retail) that would become "a superior system."

Still, a digital euro would be different, Lagarde said. Lagarde also said that while she had never invested in crypto, her son had, according to the report.

Elvira Nabiullina, governor of the Central Bank of Russia, said that the digital ruble was already being tested and that the bank was gearing up for real-world digital ruble transactions, Russian publication Vedomosti reported. The idea of a Russian central bank digital currency has been in the works for over a year. Nabiullina also said that Russia is looking to widen the pool of countries that accept the central bank’s MIR, a payment system that offers an alternative to Visa and Mastercard, which suspended operations in Russia, following the invasion of Ukraine.
