테슬라 전기차 충전표준 독식 만만치 않아졌다···왜?

테슬라의 NACS 기반 북미 충전규격 통일 야망이 장애물과 복병을 만났다. 충전파워가 약한 NACS의 단점이 경쟁진영인 복합충전시스템(Combined Charging System·CCS) 진영의 전기차 제조업체들을 달래고 끌어들이는 데 장애물로 작용하고 있다. 이런 가운데 테슬라 진영 합류를 선언했던 GM이 지난달 26일 CCS 진영 총 7개 자동차업체(BMW, 메르세데스-벤츠, 현대, 기아, 혼다,스텔란티스)와 함께 를 결집하며 고출력 충전네트워크(High-Powered Charging Network)를 결성하고 북미충전소 늘리기에 나선다고 공식 발표하기에 이르렀다.

Tesla competitor General Motors says it is pausing advertising on Twitter. The automaker is assessing the direction of Twitter under Elon Musk's leadership. Musk took control of Twitter on Friday. He has vowed to curb censorship he alleges occurs on the social media platform. GM could not be immediately reached for comment.

GMC has begun taking reservations for the $107,000 Sierra EV Denali Edition 1. The electric pickup will have 400 miles of range, fast-charging capabilities, and four-wheel “crab walk” steering. GMC expects to begin shipping the Edition 1 in early 2024 and to add lower-priced versions later that year.

General Motors is partnering with a Canadian battery recycler to produce new batteries from recovered battery materials. The two companies will work toward establishing a circular system for recycling EV batteries. The move comes as the industry races to phase out gas engines at the end of the decade. GM and other automakers are pushing for more control over the supply by onshoring operations.

The U.S. Department of Energy has issued a $2.5 billion loan to a joint battery venture between General Motors and LG Energy Solution. The funds come from the government’s Advanced Technology Vehicles Manufacturing loan program, which hasn’t funded a new loan since 2010. The loan will be used to finance the construction of new lithium-ion battery cell manufacturing facilities.

Now that we’re more than halfway through 2022, GM’s goal of catching up to Tesla for EV sales by 2025 seems like an impossible climb. Right now, GM still gets mocked on Tesla Twitter, especially with Joe Biden saying “Mary, you electrified the whole auto industry, you led…” in a time when GM still only sells around 1/10 the electric vehicles Tesla does. Depending on what part of 2025 you’re talking about, it’s either 2.5 or 3.5 years away, which isn’t much time to close that big of a gap.
