OpenAI has officially announced its next-generation flagship AI model, GPT-4.1. This new release features improved performance in nearly every aspect, including coding and instruction following, compared to the previous GPT-4o model. It can process up to one million tokens of context, a significant leap from GPT-4o’s 128,000-token limit. Alongside the standard version, GPT-4.1 also comes in two smaller variants: Mini and Nano. Nano is the smallest, fastest, and most affordable model OpenAI has released to date. All three models are now immediately available to developers. Price competitiveness has also been enhanced. GPT-4.1 is offered at a 26% lower cost than GPT-4o. With this launch, OpenAI plans to phase out the existing GPT-4 model from ChatGPT starting April 30, and will discontinue the GPT-4.5 preview in the API on July 14. Meanwhile, OpenAI is preparing to release the full version of its o3 reasoning model and the o4 mini reasoning model soon. The launch of GPT-5 has been delayed and is now expected to arrive “in a few months,” later than initially planned.
