The cryptocurrency industry continues to face trials. The U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) said it filed a lawsuit in the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of New York against cryptocurrency exchange Coinbase, alleging it acted as an unregistered broker. The move comes a day after the agency sued Binance, the world's largest cryptocurrency exchange, and its founder, CEO Changpeng Zhao. In its complaint, the SEC said Coinbase has made billions of dollars from handling cryptocurrencies since at least 2019, but violated securities laws by avoiding disclosure obligations to protect investors.

The Securities and Exchange Commission said it charged 11 people for their roles in creating and promoting a fraudulent crypto pyramid and Ponzi scheme that raised more than $300 million from millions of retail investors worldwide, including in the United States. The scheme, called Forsage, claimed to be a decentralized smart contract platform. Forsage allowed millions of retail investors to enter into transactions via smart contracts that operated on the ethereum, tron and binance blockchains.

Tesla received a new subpoena from the SEC on June 13. The subpoena is related to "our governance processes around compliance with the SEC settlement," Tesla said. That settlement came after Musk tweeted in 2018 that he had "funding secured" to take Tesla private. Musk has been bitterly critical of the SEC since that settlement.
