Leo, the first U.S.-born pope who ascended in May, singled out Musk in his first interview, noting reports that “Elon Musk may become the world’s first trillionaire” and stressing, “If that is the only thing that has value, then we are in serious trouble.” Musk’s fortune is currently estimated at around $367 billion, and under Tesla’s long-term plan, he could earn up to $1 trillion over the next decade if he meets ambitious targets. Leo highlighted the deepening inequality, saying, “Sixty years ago, CEOs earned about four to six times what workers made, but the latest figure I saw shows they now earn 600 times the average worker’s pay.” The pope also criticized the United Nations, saying it has lost its ability to resolve conflicts, and emphasized that the Vatican is working to promote dialogue in efforts to end the wars in Ukraine and Gaza.
