Google DeepMind has released its first cloud-free AI robotics model called "Gemini Robotics On-Device" that can control robots without internet connectivity. Unlike the hybrid cloud-based Gemini Robotics launched in March, this model operates entirely on a robot's local hardware and functions autonomously in environments with intermittent or no internet access. Carolina Parada, head of robotics at Google DeepMind, states that the model performs nearly as well as the cloud-based version while outperforming other on-device alternatives in general benchmarks. The model can perform complex manipulation tasks like unzipping bags, folding clothes, and origami while adapting to new tasks with just 50 to 100 demonstrations. Google successfully adapted the model, originally trained for ALOHA robots, to work on bi-arm Franka FR3 robots and Apptronik's Apollo humanoid robot. The company also released a Gemini Robotics SDK that allows developers to train new tasks using the MuJoCo physics simulator. This launch represents a significant development in the industry debate over whether robot intelligence should reside in the cloud or directly on the machine itself.
