Google announced today that it is combining its Android and hardware teams to form the Platforms and Devices division. The reorganization is seen as a strategic move to accelerate innovation in artificial intelligence (AI). The new division will oversee Google's key hardware and software products, including the Pixel smartphones, Android operating system, Chrome browser, Chrome OS, and Photos app. Rick Osterloh, formerly the head of all Google hardware, has been appointed to lead the division. Hiroshi Lockheimer, the longtime head of Android, Chrome, and Chrome OS, will take on other projects within Google and Alphabet. Google cited accelerating innovation in AI as the reason for the reorganization. "By unifying our teams, we can innovate across Google when we need to," Osterloh said.
