Google has signed a $3 billion long-term contract with Brookfield Asset Management to secure 3 GW of electricity generated from hydropower plants in the U.S.. This is the largest corporate clean energy agreement for hydropower to date. The deal includes 20-year power purchase agreements for electricity from two hydropower facilities in Pennsylvania. In addition, Google plans to invest $25 billion over the next two years to build data centers in Pennsylvania and neighboring regions. As demand for data centers and electricity surges due to the expansion of AI and cloud computing, competition among major tech companies to secure clean energy is intensifying. Ruth Porat, president of Alphabet, is expected to announce the news at an AI summit in Pittsburgh, where former President Donald Trump is also scheduled to attend. The event is expected to see a total of $70 billion in public and private investment in AI and energy announced.
