Google can now sell e-books and audiobooks directly through its iOS app, Google Play Books, bypassing Apple's App Store commission fees. According to Google's blog, users can click the "Get book" button within the app to be redirected to the Google Play website, where they can complete their purchases. This allows Google to avoid paying Apple's 30% in-app purchase commission. This change was made possible through Apple's "External Link Account Entitlement," introduced in 2022 after a settlement with Japan's Fair Trade Commission. This entitlement applies primarily to "reader apps" that provide access to digital content like books, music, and videos. Google's decision may also be linked to the legal battle between Epic Games and Apple. The case confirmed that app developers are allowed to link users to their own websites for purchases, a ruling upheld after the Supreme Court declined to hear an appeal in January 2024.
