메타가 AI 데이터 라벨링 전문 스타트업 스케일 AI(Scale AI)에 136조원(100억 달러) 이상의 투자를 검토 중이라고 블룸버그가 6월 8일 보도했다.
이번 투자가 성사되면 메타 역사상 최대 규모의 외부 AI 투자이자 민간 기업 펀딩 사례 중 역대 최대 규모 중 하나가 된다. 2016년 설립된 스케일 AI는 알렉산드르 왕이 CEO로 이끄는 회사로, 메타와 오픈AI 등 AI 기업들의 모델 훈련용 데이터 라벨링 서비스를 제공한다. 스케일 AI는 2024년 5월 10억 달러 펀딩을 통해 기업 가치 140억 달러(약 190조원)로 평가받았으며, 작년 매출 8억 7천만 달러에서 올해 20억 달러 달성을 목표로 한다. 27세의 왕 CEO는 2021년 당시 세계 최연소 자수성가 억만장자가 되었으며, 포브스는 그의 순자산을 36억 달러(약 49조원)로 추산한다.
스케일 AI는 자율주행차부터 국방 분야까지 9000개 이상 도시의 계약자들을 통해 AI 모델 훈련용 데이터를 처리하는 플랫폼을 운영한다. 메타의 이번 투자는 마이크로소프트의 오픈AI 130억 달러 투자, 구글과 아마존의 앤트로픽 지원에 맞서는 AI 경쟁 가속화의 일환으로 해석된다.
Meta is reportedly in talks to invest over $10 billion (approximately 13.6 trillion won) in Scale AI, a data labeling startup, according to Bloomberg's June 8 report. If finalized, this would mark Meta's largest external AI investment ever and one of the biggest private company funding events in history. Founded in 2016, Scale AI is led by CEO Alexandr Wang and provides data labeling services to help companies like Meta and OpenAI train their AI models. The company was valued at $14 billion (approximately 19 trillion won) following a $1 billion funding round in May 2024, with revenues growing from $870 million last year to a projected $2 billion this year. Wang, 27, became the world's youngest self-made billionaire in 2021, with Forbes estimating his current net worth at $3.6 billion (approximately 4.9 trillion won). Scale AI operates a platform that processes training data for AI models through contractors in over 9,000 cities, serving sectors from autonomous vehicles to defense applications. Meta's potential investment represents an escalation in the AI arms race, competing with Microsoft's $13+ billion investment in OpenAI and Google and Amazon's backing of Anthropic.
